Languages Mission Statement

Oughtrington Community Primary School believes that the learning of foreign languages provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. This enables the pupils to develop their communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. They develop linguistic competence, extend children’s knowledge of how language works and explore differences and similarities between foreign languages and English. Learning another language raises awareness of our multi-lingual and multi-cultural world, and introduces an international dimension to pupil’s learning. Furthermore, language learning facilitates our Values-based education in school. It enables children to deepen their understanding of values such as empathy, compassion, respect and diversity.

We have chosen to use the Primary Languages Network (PLN) scheme of work.This is a nationally known provider of content and resources. The content covers a range of topics which focus on the fundamental key skills in learning a language, which are set out in the Government’s programme of study for Foreign Languages. There are 4 stages of learning in the scheme of work. They have been developed to ensure progression during each year of language learning and each stage revisits prior learning and then builds on that learning to embed the language and skills taught.

At Oughtrington we have been able to adapt the PLN resources to meet the needs of our school and wishes of children and Parents. We have chosen to teach 2 languages on a 2 year rota. Lower Key 2 (Yr3/4) learn French and Upper Key Stage 2 (YR5/6) learn Spanish. We start at stage 1 of language learning and move on to stage 2. In KS2 the children focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Teaching staff have been provided with non-specialist training to give them appropriate opportunities to practice and build confidence in delivering the curriculum. Currently we have chosen to teach using a non-specialist curriculum, and have scope to teach using a more creative curriculum in the future. For the schemes of work, please follow the links below.

The PLN scheme of work focuses on developing these skills and therefore making our children ‘Language Detectives’. When the children leave Oughtrington we want them to have more confidence in all skills, have the abilities to make links and comparisons between different languages and cultures; including their own, be able to ask and answer questions, put ideas and opinions together to share in discussions, whilst building on vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation. Languages Skills Progression in 4 Core Skill Areas

We are able to offer after school KS1 and KS2 Spanish clubs, a lunch time French club for KS1 and an after school KS2 French club. They are very popular with our children.
