PSHCE & RSE
At Oughtrington Community Primary School we aim to promote healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Personal Health and Social Education, including Citizenship are taught in discrete lessons, as part of cross curricular lessons, during circle time and in assemblies. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community through class and school councils, fundraising events, supporting nominated charities and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE & C lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.
Many opportunities arise during the school week to touch on social issues and these unplanned discussions are also an important part of the learning in this subject. Children learn to work effectively in groups and to deal with conflict. They learn about personal safety and how to live healthy lives. We operate a zero tolerance policy regarding bullying and our definition of bullying is clear and concise and shared with the children each year, giving them the opportunity to change or ask questions surrounding what it means.

In EYFS there is a heavy focus on making relationships, managing feelings and behaviour and self-care including self-awareness. This learning continues in KS1 and the children are expected to begin to demonstrate problem solving skills, show an awareness of the consequences of their actions and show respect for one another. In KS2, children are encouraged to independently set realistic goals for themselves, make healthy choices about their lifestyle and demonstrate an understanding of values (eg. cooperation, respect and friendship etc). At the end of KS2, children begin to identify and discuss some of the physical changes associated with puberty (eg. breaking of voice). Sex and relationship education is taught, with the main teaching about sex and relationships being part of the summer curriculum in Year 5. Parents are invited to view the resources we use eg. videos and literature before their children have a lesson of this nature. In Year 6, children explore where money comes from, how to keep it safe and how to manage it effectively.
They learn how money plays an important part in people’s lives and develop a basic understanding of enterprise. Our Year 6 children also learn about democracy and they practise this through their campaigns to become elected as school councillors.
From September 2020, relationships and sex education will become statutory in all secondary schools in England and relationships education will become statutory in all primary schools in England.
All schools providing primary education must teach health and relationships education. Parents do not have the right to withdraw pupils from relationships education.
Primary schools are not required to teach sex education. However, the Department of Education recommends that all primary schools have a sex education program of work. Children have the right to comprehensive sex education and FPA strongly recommends that all primary schools teach age-appropriate sex education.
At Oughtrington, we teach sex education in Year 5 and 6. The resources that will be used and the information that will be delivered is made available for parents to view prior to it being taught. Parents have the right to 'opt out' from their child being taught this information.
