August 14th 2020

Dear parents/carers,

I hope this message finds you all well and that you are enjoying your summer break.

As the start of the new school year is getting closer, I wanted to get in touch to update you about some of the key arrangements regarding the return to school for all pupils on Thursday 3rd September 2020.

Following government guidance, we will be staggering the drop off and pick up times for children from the 3rd September in order to reduce congestion and therefore any potential infection risk. To do this, we have decided to split the school alphabetically according to surname.
The timings for family drop-off and pick-ups are as follows:

Start/Finish time 1: 8:40/3:05 surnames A to E (inclusive)
Start/Finish time 2: 8:50/3:15 surnames F to M (inclusive)
Start/Finish time 3: 9:00/3:25 surnames N to Z (inclusive)

We are aware there are families with siblings who have different surnames. To enable you to complete just one drop off/pick up please use the child's surname that is first alphabetically. Childminders should use the drop-off and pick-up times that correspond to THEIR OWN surname and can drop off/pick up all of the children in their care at that time. We would appreciate it if you could pass this information on to your childminder.

If a family friend is collecting your child, please let the class teacher know at the start of the school day. If due to EXCEPTIONAL circumstances your allotted slot will not work for you, please put a request for an alternative slot in writing for the attention of SLT.

Please only enter the school grounds at the time of your allocated slot, even if you have reached school earlier than planned. This is to help us reduce the number of adults and children on site so that we can all maintain social distancing and keep one another safe. Your cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.

There will continue to be a one-way system in operation around the outside of the school building at drop-off and pick-up times. Parents should enter school through the front pedestrian gate and follow the one-way system to drop children off directly at their classroom door, then continue on the one-way system to exit. Miss Freeman’s class should be dropped off and collected from the Y1 cloakroom doors, and Mrs Copper/Mrs Shaw’s class should use the Y3 cloakroom door in the back playground for entry and exit. Parents of Y5 children can cross the carpark and drop children off at their classroom doors; you do not have to walk all the way around school!

All children who use Oughty Owls can be dropped off and picked up as normal via the New Hall entrance.
Staff cannot wait to welcome children into their new classrooms and, as a school, we feel we have put rigorous systems of controls in place that will ensure a safe full reopening for all concerned. Details of these measures can be found in the attached document. Please read this carefully as it includes details of what children should bring to school, arrangements for children who fall ill on site and information about P.E. kits and uniform. Please note, it will not be possible to purchase toast from school as a mid-morning snack and therefore children will need to bring their own. Please only send healthy snacks such as fruit, toast or cereal bars. Children will not be allowed to eat chocolate and crisps during playtimes.

A risk assessment for Covid 19 can be found on the school website. An updated version for the full reopening of school is currently with the local authority and this will be posted on the school website once approved.

I’m sure that as parents you will be experiencing some anxiety about your children returning to school, the education that they missed during the last academic year and how they will ‘catch up’ on their missed learning. Hopefully, reading about the system of controls in place will have reassured you regarding their safety. As you may have read in the press, the Government has allocated extra funds to schools to support educational catch up. Staff will be spending the first few weeks making informal assessments of where children are in their learning and we will then use this funding as appropriate to support their needs. More details of how this will be used will follow.

We hope that this wonderful weather continues for the rest of the holidays. If you are planning to travel abroad over the next couple of weeks, please bear in mind that requirements for quarantining are changing all the time. In order to keep our whole school community safe, please ensure you do stick to the guidelines regarding self-isolation where it is necessary to do so. Please also inform the school office if you are needing to isolate and this period of isolation falls during term time.

A quote to end on; ‘Keep your face towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you.’ (Walt Whitman). Here’s looking forward to the start of a new term filled with positivity and good times. We look forward to seeing you in September.
